Illustrations by Katy Farina, I definitely know what you mean. And you are not...
I definitely know what you mean. And you are not alone. I think that when you start drawing and start making art, you have so many places in need of improvement, and literally everything left to learn. It doesn’t matter what you’re drawing because it’s all new and interesting and you tear through sketchbooks exploring the world inside your head and how you can transfer that onto paper.

I think that as you start drawing more and more you start refining those worlds and drawings and you start learning about detail and perspective and how to draw believable anatomy. You start paying attention to what you’re doing more. Mistakes stand out. It’s hard to be lose with your art the way you used to be.

I don’t think the fun goes away, but you’re also looking at your current sketchbooks with a trained eye, and you’re looking at those old sketchbooks with an eye of nostalgia. You’re looking back and thinking, wow remember when I didn’t care how bad these stories were or how bad these drawings were?

So I guess here’s my advice - make bad art again. Do that by trying to learn new skills and by making marks in a new way. Try to do crosshatch ing in a new way. Try to paint in a new way. Stop trying to learn by making amazing art right off the bat; learn by making a lot of mistakes and trying new things the exact same way you used to in those old sketchbooks. Draw the characters in your head really differently. Make them look ugly and weird. Draw indulgent characters. You can make your sketchbooks fun for yourself again. You really can.

Because I promise you, in three years you’ll look at you sketchbooks now and remember how fun it was to draw that one thing, the same way you’re now looking at sketchbooks from three years ago.
